Mark McGuiness believes artists are uniquely suited to succeed online as they are the original content creators. On the other hand, when it comes to content marketing, he believes they are weak.
Though there is merit in his argument, I do not buy it completely. Granted artists are the original content developers but who says they are weak in content marketing. A look at the fancy bids at auction houses is enough to make the assertion false.
Leaving the question of the marketing abilities of artists, I would like to focus on another question all together, that is their disdain for creating content on specification.
Let me explain further, one of the everyday tasks I handle as a content writer is writing for a directory website. As everyone in this line of work knows, it is the dreariest job imaginable. The specification goes as follows, write a 100 word introduction say for Bangkok International Exhibition Centre, with another 60 words on the location, meaning accessibility, neighboring landmarks etc.,
Now, I wonder, how many of these artists can do this day and day out and stoop to conquer?
This is not to say that I am superior to their content creation abilities, but this is an attempt to point out that creating online content is a different kind of beast.
Here other factors other than originality matters and hence I strongly believe that artists are by their very nature programmed to fail as they cannot subjugate their free spirit to succeed in the online world.
"but who says they are weak in content marketing."
ReplyDeleteNot me. If you look at the title of my article, it's called 'Why Artists and Creatives Have an Unfair Advantage at Internet Marketing'.
